Graduate News | The Pizza Puzzle from CIPS
(21st November 2008)

You are a buyer working for a well known pizza brand. You have been given the task of finding a new supplier of tomato sauce, the base ingredient of all your company’s pizzas.

Supplier A comes in with the lowest price but they’re in a third world country and there could be problems with continuity of supply and there are questions over the pay and conditions for their workers.

Supplier B is East European, slightly more expensive but their sauce is organic and they have positive environmental credentials.

Supplier C is British and a local cooperative. They are most expensive but transport costs will be lower. They are also dependanton a good summer.

Which would you choose?

These are the kind of fascinating and challenging dilemmas that face people who work in purchasing and supply every day of their working lives. Just to make things even more interesting, the answer to the above would also depend on the ethos of your company and the internal demands of the organisation – from chefs to quality control, marketing to sales – they will all have a view which you as buyer will need to take into account.

Your kind of challenge?

With a starting salary of around £25K, highly respected qualifications and training available and a lot of travel involved, more and more graduates are choosing a future in the purchasing and supply profession.
