Company Information

Alstom is a global leader in the world of power generation and rail infrastructure and sets the benchmark for innovative and environmentally friendly technologies. Alstom builds the fastest train and the highest capacity automated metro in the world and provides turnkey integrated power plant solutions and associated services for a wide variety of energy sources, including hydro, gas and coal. The Group employs over 60,000 people in 70 countries, and had orders of 13.4 billion euros in 2005/06.

We build the world's cleanest power plants using advanced boiler and steam turbine technologies, low NOx gas turbines and the most comprehensive range of air emissions control equipment anywhere in the industry. Having supplied over 25% of the world's installed capacity, Alstom has vast experience in the design, manufacture, installation and servicing of power generation equipment.

The UK is an important country for Alstom. We employ just under 5000 people in approximately 30 locations and we are a major supplier of products and services to the Power Generation and Rail Transport industries.

For the 2005-06 financial year, we had orders of over half a billion pounds in the UK and our order book currently stands at over one billion pounds. Looking ahead, the UK could represent something like 10 billion pounds of business in the next 5 to10 years.

Alstom in the UK is made up of the following units;

Power Service
Alstom's Power Service Sector provides a complete range of power generation services, support and equipment worldwide. We offer repair, performance improvement, lifetime extension services, on-site field services, as well as full operation and maintenance solutions.

Alstom is firmly established as the market leader in servicing power generation equipment and we are playing our part in keeping the lights on in the UK. Through our comprehensive product knowledge, we are continually working to reduce the length of service periods. And coupled with our diagnostic technologies and critical spares provision, we are reducing our customers risk of unplanned outages. To support future power supply, we have developed further products and services across the range of power plant technologies that are helping customers make informed decisions for station life extension.

Alstom offers the complete range of services, from spare parts provision to full operation and maintenance of plants and our service portfolio extends from fossil-fuelled, to nuclear, to hydro power generating plants. We currently have nine Long Term Service Agreements, including operation and maintenance contracts, at power and industrial plants across the UK.

Our Power Service business in the UK is on target to achieve its 5th record year of growth, enabling Alstom to make substantial investments to strengthen further our UK Power Service business for the future.

Power Systems, Steam Turbine Retrofits

Alstom's Power Systems Sector offers world-class technical and commercial steam turbine retrofit solutions.

Turbine retrofitting is the practice of replacing older turbine components with state-of-the-art technology for improved performance. The scope of retrofitting may vary from the replacement of entire turbine modules to specific steam path components, such as rotors and diaphragms.
The principal reason for retrofitting is to take benefit of the improved performance and mechanical features that contemporary designs offer. These features provide tangible financial benefits such as additional power revenues, reduced operational and maintenance costs as well as the extension of key component lifetime.
The main drivers for steam turbine retrofitting will vary for each power plant operator. In many cases, operators are adapting to specific changes taking place in many of the world's electricity markets with the introduction of deregulation, competitive electricity trading and stricter limits on environmental emissions. In other cases the operational and maintenance limitations inherent in today's ageing fleet are being addressed.
Power Systems, Plant Construction

Alstom offers a comprehensive capability, possessing the broadest scope of power generation systems, equipment and services in the industry. Our customers enjoy the maximum of options plus the most economical, environmentally friendly and advanced technologies.

As a Plant Integrator, Alstom designs, manufactures, constructs and commissions large sophisticated power plants on a full turnkey basis with major components manufactured in-house. We offer world-leading technologies in all of the key areas of power generation and a global sales and service network covering over 70 countries.

At Alstom we have more air pollution control experience and a larger installed base across a wider range of industries than any other company. This unparalleled level of expertise serves our customers to meet their ongoing emission compliance needs.

Alstom offers a wide range of customised air pollution control (APC) solutions for new plants as well as retrofits, with reliable and robust systems based on more than 70 years of experience. Our excellence in project execution with dedicated project teams is aided by a worldwide network of engineering and execution centres, complemented by local knowledge and support.

Power Systems, Technology Centre
Alstom regards competitive technology as a key element of its business strategy, both to meet the quality and efficiency expectations of its customers and to achieve its own financial targets.
Alstom's Power Technology Centre, based in Rugby, helps us to continuously improve the performance, functionality and cost-effectiveness of our products and services. We are constantly developing new technical solutions or innovative applications of existing elements such as emerging new materials and advanced engineering simulation systems.
Developments made in the Technology Centre are enabling us to improve the lifetime of mechanical components in gas and steam turbines, and the power outputs of electrical machines, all of which translate into lower costs for our clients.

We are also reducing the environmental impact of our products, for example through improved power generation efficiencies, novel combustion systems which inhibit NOx formation in gas turbines, new boiler schemes for clean coal combustion, and working on the challenge of zero-emission systems which capture all the CO2 from fuel.

Power Systems, Aerospace

Alstom offers total aerospace solutions built around world-class technology. Our unique capability extends from product concept to in-service support, and we pride ourselves on our ability to integrate smoothly and efficiently into our customers processes.

Our pedigree in the aerospace industry has been built over 40 years in industrial gas turbine supply, including two decades in the manufacture of core aero engine components for civil and military applications.

All of the expertise necessary for the design, manufacture and overhaul of modern aircraft engines is available through Alstom. We offer a full range of aero engine products and our participation in engine programmes ranges from make-to-print, to revenue and risk share partnerships, where Alstom's aerospace business designs and supplies finished components.

Alstom has been at the forefront in the development of thermal analysis software for over 20 years, and today markets a suite of design tools, which are successfully used in a wide range of applications including satellite and aero-engine design. We have also developed a suite of advanced analysis tools in co-operation with the European Space Agency. These tools are widely used and, in some areas, have become the de-facto standard.

Alstom's manufacture capabilities cover a wide range of rotating products including compressor and turbine blading, fan blades, discs and blisks. Our static components include fan casings, core engine casings and guide vanes.

Transport

Alstom employs around 27,000 people in its Transport Sector in over 60 countries. We are a market leader in very high-speed trains, high-speed trains and tilting trains. We are also the second-largest supplier of urban light rail and tram systems, commuter and regional trains, services, signalling and systems.

In the UK, Alstom Transport employs approximately 2,000 people at over 20 different locations. We are a major supplier of UK main line rolling stock, metro cars for the London Underground, electrical renovation, maintenance and signalling systems. We recently supplied new regional train fleets, the West Coast Main Line Pendolino fleet and additional trains and cars for the Jubilee Line fleet in London.

Alstom Transport in the UK has changed significantly in the last two years to reflect new market circumstances and is now concentrating on full service provision, train maintenance, electrical renovation, parts and signalling. Alstom Transport is also bidding for new rolling stock for regional, metro and tramway projects, using our UK-based design and engineering, project management and safety case expertise with manufacturing resource coming from our plants, mainly in Europe.

Alstom Transport maintains both the Jubilee and Northern Line fleets on the London Underground for Tube Lines from its Stratford Market, Golders Green and Morden depots and has recently completed the Jubilee Line fleet extension project. This involved the construction and integration of four new metro trains and 59 new cars into the existing fleet providing capacity for an additional 6000 passengers per hour during peak periods.

Alstom Transport also built, tested and delivered the West Coast Main Line Pendolino fleet for Virgin trains and now maintains the fleet, providing a comprehensive 24/7 service to Virgin. Depots involved in the maintenance work have undergone extensive development as part of a £25 million overall investment programme to ensure effective and timely maintenance of Virgin and other operators trains.

Looking to the future, we are confident that Alstom Transport is well positioned to provide the expected high level of service to our customers and to develop the solutions they require to meet their business needs.
