The ideal job is going to be different for everyone, but there are some golden rules to keep in mind as you embark on your job hunt.

  1. Do your research

Every studio will have a different approach to their work and, with competition high, they are likely to only consider applicants who can demonstrate that their attitude is in line with theirs. Look at their future plans, and detail in your cover letter how you would be an ideal addition to the team.

  1. Know your software

It’s better to be an expert on one CAD than have a basic knowledge of several different ones. Find out which programme a studio uses, and apply to the ones where you know you can stand out. If the studio is entering competitions or sending out pitches, CGI skills will be invaluable to them.

  1. Go where the work is

It might not be as glamorous as a Grand Designs project, but getting involved with the companies behind affordable housing, council buildings and hospitals will provide stable work and a firm platform to develop your skills.

  1. Start small

Taking on freelance projects and short-term contract work might not be ideal forever, but it’s a great starting point to widen your experience and demonstrate your ability to adapt to different working environments. It will also introduce you to lots of people in the industry, which leads to…

  1. Network, network, network!

People trust personal recommendations more than any speculative CV, so the more people you work with, the wider your network will grow and the more opportunities you’ll find. As is the case in many creative industries, it’s not what you know; it’s who you know!

Be prepared for the fact that it can take some time before you land your perfect job, but treat every interview as a learning opportunity and you’ll soon impress with your positive attitude as well as the skills you’re building along the way.
