Dull? Unglamorous? Low salary? Think again! Gary Benardout of hgvtraining.co.uk is working hard to fill the logistics skills gap – here’s why this is a career path worth considering.

I suspect that a job as a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) driver isn’t front of mind when first thinking about careers. Of course, it might not be the right job for everybody (and which job is), but HGV driving as a career is not only engaging and secure, it pays much more than you might expect, with plenty of opportunities for furthering your skillset.

Currently there are 100k+ jobs in the sector – and one of them could have your name on it! So for anyone fed up with their job, or who’s looking for a new career path…here are ten reasons why HGV driving might just work for you.

1) Anyone can do it!

If you have a valid driving license, you’ll just need to get a CPC certificate – which can be obtained quickly through a training provider. You don’t need a degree or even A Levels to start and some services also offer recruitment opportunities so that when you qualify you’ll have a range of jobs to apply for.

2) There is a huge need for HGV drivers!

Great news for you if you’re thinking about a new career! The 100k+ figure above is the number of drivers the UK needs in the next years to avoid an economic catastrophe. Bad news for retailers and delivery companies but good news if you’re thinking about becoming an HGV driver.

3) Every day is different!

If you’re not one for being stuck in an office, HGV driving lets you see the world. You’ll get to meet new people and experience lots of great things along the way.

4) It offers job security!

With plenty of jobs available, a career as an HGV driver is definitely worth considering. Drivers are needed urgently, and with some people finding even temporary part-time jobs hard to come by – this could solve any job worries.

5) It (quickly) pays more than you might expect!

Depending on the industry you work in, you can expect to earn up to £50,000. If you undertake further training to pick up specialist skills you could be earning even more than this, surpassing salaries of those working in hospitality and retail.

6) It’s more varied than you think!

HGV driving as a career isn’t just about driving from A to B. You’ll also be working as part of a wider team, dealing with customers and planning routes.

7) You can be your own boss!

This appeals to lots of us because there are plenty of benefits. Nearly a quarter of HGV drivers are self-employed and finance their own vehicle meaning they can make the most of numerous perks and flexibility.

8) Career progression!

A career in HGV driving can take you places – quite literally! With the right training and support, you can learn new skills to expand your career portfolio ensuring you keep moving up the ladder, while continuously boosting your pay packet. If you work hard and make the most of the opportunities out there, you can find your way into transport manager positions and then, the skies the limit.

9) A sense of pride in doing a job that makes a difference!

People don’t always realise that without the logistics industry many retailers and businesses would grind to a halt. HGV driving does make a difference to the world – whether it’s ensuring supermarket shelves are stocked, or whether it’s delivering life-saving supplies to hospitals, HGV driving may be right for you.

10) It’s easier than you think to get going!

There are a wide range of options when it comes to training so pick up the phone, it might just surprise you!
